All government employees must follow their department rules in dealing with foreign mages. Culture clashes are not allowed. Mages must be clearly identified and may not actively use magic on mages from other countries under most conditions.

The next day was spent with my mind in the world of treaties. I focused on the details of treaties with Japan and China. There were so many, all with multiple layers that made no sense and sometimes actively contradicted each other. I had no idea how people did this day after day. It was boring, confusing, and frustrating all at the same time. Carelian spent most of his time sleeping, but I'd already promised him a long hike this weekend. There was a place we could step to and head out over the Appalachian trail. He enjoyed catching the occasional snack, but mostly just chasing things for entertainment. After I settled down we'd have to talk, because he'd go crazy coming to work with me all the time, but for now he said he needed to be here.

Thursday morning I walked into the office, already feeling the boredom and drudgery weighing at me. If they made the offer good enough, I might turn over James's research just to end this hell faster. If we hiked on Saturday, I could go over it on Sunday. I was pretty sure Lucille could get the information and the keys to the house for me.

A man I didn't know waited at my cubicle. When I got close enough he snapped out at me, "There is a meeting at six pm." His voice had the odd flatness of someone who had learned English via listening to computers. "Be ready to stay late. Negotiators in China are getting up early to meet with us. They will have the authority to talk through some of the issues with the current line items. Japan will not be there."

I looked up at him, he was at least three inches taller than me, and half smiled. "Hi? You are?"

He huffed at me, and I narrowed my eyes waiting for his response. "Scott Yang. I'm the lead with Pearl on this treaty. I heard you have already pissed off the Japanese. The two of us are going to focus on China and see if we can nail down their aspect. Then if we get into meetings with Japan, we will see what happens. If nothing else we can use you to rattle them and piss them off. Might be worth a try." He stared at me the entire time and I fought not to hunch my shoulders.

"That might work. You may need to have someone check into how mad the emperor still is at me. But I'll be ready."

Scott nodded at me and turned, leaving without another word.

I sighed and glanced down at my foot rest. "Feel like going to get some dinner later before the meeting? You don't need to come to the meeting you know, it will be all boring and lots of talk.
